“As the owners, designers and builders, we set out to achieve a number of objectives,” said Mark Humphrey. “Ecological sustainability was significant. We had to overcome a difficult site which falls quite steeply, has up to two metres of fill in places, is subject to flooding, is vulnerable to overlooking from all directions and has a large easement along one side.” “We wanted to exploit pleasant views to the west and avoid unpleasant views to the east. The building had to reflect the owners' personalities. It would be unpretentious but funky, warm, homely and bright. It had to be suitable for a young family of five people and a mix of programs, including working from home and entertaining regularly. The design solution had to be reasonably innovative and work as a marketing tool for a fledgling design practice.” The Judges agreed that Mark had demonstrated great skill in the creation of this successful design concept. “Mark has created a vibrant, contemporary dwelling through the effective use of materials, texture, colour, and form,” said Geoff Hoare, Chair of the Judging Panel. “His attention to detail has created a smart building with simple clean lines.”
