“The structure of this South Melbourne Project proved to be poorly built – boundary walls bricks on edge,” said David Terry. “Because the building was on a street corner and was part of a row of identical joined cottages, heritage aspects were important. There was no possibility of adding a contemporary design, and the new upper storey had to be very unobtrusive,” said David.
“This project was a complete renovation of an existing worker’s cottage in a heritage overlay area in South Melbourne,” said Geoff Hoare, Chair of the Judging Panel. “The client wanted an upper-storey bedroom and ensuite, and all facilities in the property to be upgraded. The interior feeling was to be minimalist, and the accommodation was to provide two bedrooms and possibly a study. All this, and more, has been achieved.”
