Colorbond Award for Most Effective Use of Steel

The Village Lighthouse, Metung

“The client wanted six holiday apartments designed, all with water views, at Metung,” said James Couper of JJC Design. “The developer/builder’s interest in the project was greater than just the construction of the dwellings. He owns one of the adjacent properties and wanted to construct a development that would complement his holiday home. His brief was different to most multi-dwelling sites, in that he didn’t want to clutter the site with the maximum number of dwellings, but to provide an atmosphere of spaciousness,” added James.

“The site had the difficulties that the major views were to the south across Bancroft Bay, so the use of clerestory and double glazing were paramount in achieving 4 and 5 Star energy ratings. Boat trailer parking has been made available for three of the dwellings, and all have large balconies to provide outdoor dining and to take advantage of the south easterly views,” said James.

“The judges agreed this project was deemed worthy of this award through its imaginative and effective use of steel as a feature cladding,” said Geoff Hoare, Chair of the Judging Panel. “The project features steelwork to its greatest effect within the façade and the roof form. The resultant design is dynamic and interesting in its application of the material.”
