Glen Iris Project
The clients wanted to develop two contemporary dwellings on a north-south corner-site with a 2m fall, which would complement the character of the neighbourhood and optimise the use of the site. The solution was to provide individual access from each intersecting street, enhancing the sense of two individual houses yet allowing them to benefit from northerly open courtyards. The resultant two-storey homes are well articulated using a combination of earthy materials: narrow bricks, polished western red cedar, stacked stone, sandstone pavers and timber windows, which give a complementary but distinctive result to the neighbourhood. In a neighbourhood environment where building form often results in copying surrounding building elements, this project demonstrates that contemporary ideas can use well-detailed traditional forms, shapes and materials eloquently to produce a refreshing design that complements the neighbourhood character while remaining distinctive.
