The clients required a new five-bedroom house for a young and busy family (four children) on a 1.3 hectare bushland site. The family spends a lot of time together, and needed large, open-plan and versatile living spaces, whilst maximising the magnificent views to the east and the north. ESD principles had to be incorporated. The building form evolved out of a response to the site’s proximity to older iconic farm buildings overlooking and surrounded by Central Victoria’s box-ironbark forests. The design responds harmoniously with the existing mature eucalyptus trees on the site, all of which have been retained. This project excels in its relationship between the family, the environment, and the future. It marries the emotional well-being of the family with the sensitivity of the surrounding landscape, and the ability to grow and evolve with both.
