Mornington Project

A stunning, contemporary beachside residence in Mornington has won the 2005 BDAV Building Design of the Year. The Judges were unanimous in awarding the owner-built Mornington Esplanade project this prestigious award. The Judges believed this design developed an individual expression for customised living in a home that complemented the client’s design brief via a rich source of inspiration, free from natural limitations and attachments.

“The client’s brief required the floor plan to be identical to that of the existing humble Californian bungalow formerly on the site. The designer executed this task with care, and with innovative ideas and a creative approach. The design is a modern, yet warm, generously proportioned home, that exploits the inviting picturesque waterfront Mornington Harbour panorama, with a counterpoint to the city of Melbourne skyline,” said Judging Chair, Ron Pickford.

“The home features a realistic visual appearance that is practical with a hint of emulation, formal sophistication to elegant contemporary, showcasing a remarkable diverse array of modern building materials. There is something visually exciting in its creativity that convinces the eye that it is observing a design event of interplaying variations.”

“The floor plan has elegant simplicity of clean lines that works for a relaxed lifestyle, and is easy in its total concept of qualities of light, space and good design, treating the home as a total concept, rather than a series of individual elements.”

“This is an enthusiastic design, characterised by an energetic creative approach that has resulted in an award winning contemporary home”, added Mr Pickford.
