The clients wanted an energy efficient beach home designed to meet their needs, and their older children and grandchildren. It had to incorporate design features that captured the rhythm of the sea while minimising the visual impact on the coastal landscape. We had to select materials that work with the environment and age well, to keep maintenance to a minimum. We also had to utilise sustainable materials from renewable sources. As the adjacent property was subject to a covenant stipulating the use of sympathetic materials and design, we designed two homes side by side, with two very different client briefs, using the same materials and forms. This stunning, state-of-the-art home won the award for Best Design of Environmental & Energy Efficient Buildings because it blends beautiful aesthetics and sustainability to provide a living space that is comfortable, and is sensitive to its unique
