Best Response to a Design Brief by a Student

Frances Piesse
Student at RMIT School of Design

The brief was to design a 30 bed Aged Care Facility at 11-15 Daniel St., Greenlakes (a fictitious suburb of Melbourne), to cater for the ageing population of the surrounding area. The Aged Care Facility was to be low care in nature, meaning that the residents are able to freely move around the building and grounds. However the design of the building had to comply with AS 1428, Disabled Access Code. The site is rectangular in shape and has its primary frontage to Daniel Street, with a right of way on the eastern boundary. The site, which also has a 4.0m easement on the north boundary, is 2,066 m2 in area. The Aged Care Facility managers wanted the building to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

The finalists in the student category were:

  • Frances Piesse, student at RMIT School of Design (Winner)
  • Katherine Coulter, student at RMIT School of Design (Runner-Up)
  • Vincent Leong HK, student at Holmesglen TAFE (Certificate of Merit)
  • Devla Kabas, student at RMIT School of Design
  • Lucas Ryle, student at RMIT School of Design

The Judges observed that competition was very fierce in this year’s Student Category, but were unanimous that Frances Piesse was the winner of this Award, for her well considered, well thought-out submission, which she presented very confidently to the panel of Judges.
