The Peninsula School, Mt Eliza

This redevelopment project which provides a strong new public face for an existing school sets an example for institutional design. The Peninsula School began over 40 years ago. One of the original buildings, the Junior School, had exceeded its ‘use by’ date, and required renovation and extension. The brief included a new reception area for the whole school, plus an extension to house new classrooms, associated areas and administration for the entire School. The building has been designed to be environmentally friendly. Classrooms and library are not air-conditioned. Instead, each area features thermal chimneys that have remote controlled glass louvres with reversible ceiling fans, to exhaust hot air or import fresh air. All glazing is ‘low E’ and all west facing walls are protected by verandahs. Walls and ceilings have been double insulated. Internal areas, including classrooms, have natural lighting, thus eliminating the need for artificial lighting. The design is to be commended for its passive energy efficiency measures such as the innovative roof forms which encourage natural cooling, thereby eliminating the need for mechanical cooling to the library and classrooms in summer.
