Balaclava Renovation

The clients resided in a Victorian miners cottage in Balaclava. They wanted to retain the existing Victorian style to the street and create a two storey house that was full of light, air, which addressed the location, adjacent to the Balaclava railway siding. They wanted a formal living area, new bathroom, kitchen, family room, and dining area, which had to open out onto an external entertaining deck, yet make best use of the narrow site. Two bedrooms were required to the upper floor, with the second bedroom being able to be divided in the future when their two daughters grow older. The judges felt this project presents an exciting solution to the planning and structural problems which can be encountered when adding to an existing building. The design acknowledges accepted heritage conservation principles in that the addition is clearly discernable from the existing fabric while not dominating it in the streetscape. Challenging structural constraints have been addressed through the use of an exposed steel frame which is independent of the existing building. Interior treatments successfully integrate the addition with existing spaces.
