The Marcus Beach house, 10 minutes south of Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, sets a new benchmark in the history of the BDAV Building Design Awards, and the judging panel unanimously voted it the Building Design of the Year for 2006.

Wilson ID have clearly demonstrated significant skill in the use of a myriad of materials; in the design of the floor plan and facade elements; and in responding to the client brief to “avoid the obvious”.

The design elements used in the project culminate to provide a dynamic visual experience, and create a sublime living environment. The design theme, and the materials and colour palette, have clearly evolved from and evoke the beachside context; and which fully embraces the opportunities presented to the designer by the local temperate climate.

The flexible zoning of the various living areas; the incorporation of conversation areas that feed into relaxed external landscaped areas, and the location of the bedrooms offering open sweeping views, displays significant assessment of the clients’ needs having been carefully considered. The provision of a dedicated location for even the client’s dog is further evidence of the rigour of the designer’s thought process!!

The sculptural form of the base concrete support element, and the way many of the materials had been successfully used in the project, was of specific interest to the judging panel. The design, whilst being contemporary, has a timeless appeal; a further significant quality that makes this design a remarkable piece of architecture.

The residence is the product of designer who has shown great confidence in the design of their project.

Importantly, the design has fully responded to the clients brief. The design indeed avoids the obvious “trophy home” adornments; rather the design uses a sophisticated layering of materials and innovative use of ‘fluid’ space, to provide what is a creative and unique, but entirely liveable home.
