Marriott Hotel Café Renovation
Robert O'Neil

Melbourne is world famous for its café culture. For an international hotel in the heart of Melbourne’s theatre district, the café restaurant at the Marriott Hotel is an important nexus for locals and visitors. The Marriott wanted to upgrade and enhance the café space, and incorporate the breakfast buffet to allow for a multi-functioning bar area. The fitout is an excellent result. The design maximises space in a location small on space. Particular attention to detail has been provided in the use of materials and colours, which enhance a warm feel, with a trendy ambiance. Smart, joinery concepts have also been used in the design of the counter and display units, as well as the shelving. All this makes the café not only functional, but inviting. The café and kitchen area now provide a new revitalised feel to the place, enhancing its functionality, access and desirability. The stepped interface of the low seating at tables along the window edge allow the higher tables behind, as well as the coffee machine and cake fridge, to be visible from the street, inviting passers-by in to take part in the event. The high tables are also ideal for locals to pause at, when throwing back their espresso fix while mingling with world travellers.
