The clients had a well-worn, single-storey, double-fronted Victorian weatherboard house which previously had some internal alterations and a flat roof section added to the rear. It had an east/west orientation and was located in the inner suburban precinct of Prahran. The designer’s challenge was to retain and upgrade the original Victorian section of the house and add a new section, with an overall result of an innovative, contemporary living environment to suit the needs of a professional couple. The additions were to maximise the width of the block, provide sunlight penetration to internal spaces, add an extra room, include al-fresco dining and maximise the capital value of the property. The designer's response successfully deals with the constraints presented by this Victorian house and a small site which was subject to heritage controls. While the existing fabric has been handled with sensitivity, the additions provide well-resolved contemporary volumes which are visually appealing and highly liveable.
