The Yan Yean Chapel was voted unanimously by the judges to win the award for Most Effective Use of Timber. This unique chapel design encompasses the true spirit; “pardon the word” of the utilisation of timber; embracing its environment perfectly. Whilst considered a modern project, the design of this building reflects an old style Asian feel, and portrays a warmth and sympathetic amalgam with its surrounds and purpose. The use of large span timber posts and beams marry with the stonework and glass, and together with its huge cantilevered verandah open up the building to the sky and earth. Surely what was intended.
