The use of stone as a key building material in the Yan Yean Chapel has been pivotal to the success of this project. The use of stone serves to give an expression of the chapel’s setting and evokes a sense of sacredness. The stone and timber building of contemporary design sits beautifully within its surroundings. Its gently curving roof lines reflect the rolling hills to the west and the mountains of the Great Dividing Range to the north.

The Building Designer has clearly demonstrated significant skill. The exquisite use of timber, stone and concrete, and the soft curved roof line, all exhibit significant control and restraint. These elements, coupled with a strong lineal podium base, all combine to provide a unique experience which underpins its context.

The design theme, materials and colour palette fully embraces the intended use of the building.

Northwood Farm is a country holiday house in a rural setting near Seymour, Victoria. The owner, who runs a small-scale beef cattle farm at the property, wanted an earthy feel, plus robust materials, strong architectural shapes, as well as light and space. The farmhouse has been constructed within their budget. The modern, yet warm design is a building that blends well within its natural environment. The extensive use of stone helps to anchor the building. A natural palette of materials and textures, along with the interesting use of space, underlines the concept. The house offers unexpected space, and blends harmoniously with the rural surroundings. Zoned living areas offer privacy when needed. A courtyard both divides and links the living spaces and the bedroom wing, sheltering an outdoor spa. The owners immediately loved the warmth and solid feel of this farmhouse. The family is comfortably accommodated for weekend getaways, with peaceful outlooks from every aspect.
