BlueScope Steel Award for Most Effective Use of Steel

Tracy Island Project

Most Effective Use of Steel

Robert Hamer

The Tracy Island Project is a worthy winner of the “Most Effective use of Steel”. Set on a sloping site in Arthurs Seat, this magnificent property, designed for the designer’s brother – a successful and leading medical professional with a taste for the finer things, as do his friends – takes advantage of the breathtaking views over Port Phillip Bay.

No expense has been spared for this project which does indeed resemble something reminiscent of the ‘Thunderbirds’ residence, aka the 1960’s series.

An extensive amount of steel has been used as the basis of this design, which allows for expansive verandahs and decks. Laser cut steel sunshades are incorporated to provide both practical and aesthetic features, and the black custom orb and silver steel cladding give the residence the lines and texture which help make it so impressive. Further, steel and wire deck handrails angle out with posts and create a feature in their own right.

To use the ‘Thunderbirds’ catch-cry: FAB.
