San Remo Fisherman's Co-op

Once a thriving industry, the San Remo Fisherman's Co Operative was experiencing hard times under with the introduction of reduced fishing quotas; however, the small take-away fish and chip shop on the building's south end had shown potential as the small fishing village grew in popularity with holiday makers to become one of the State's major tourist destinations. The challenge here was to provide an adjunct to the existing building, removing part of the old structure, and creating a modern and open restaurant, fish sales and aquaculture education building. All this needed to be achieved within a strict budget and the many government department constraints. Something we can all relate to.

The result speaks for itself. This building is sensitive to its natural environment, and uses simple rooflines, natural timbers, polished but practical concrete floors and an extensive use of windows and balconies to present a link to the bay and fishing fleet, bringing new life to the area, all whilst retaining the village character. No doubt this development will, in time, become one of San Remo's iconic buildings.
