Smiths Beach Units Project

The brief was to design for "four low-cost detached beach shacks"; however, this winning project has achieved outcomes for the clients that do anything but resemble "beach shacks".

This coastal development on the idyllic Phillip Island nestled amongst a mix of coastal homes and residences are on a generous block. The generous size of the site enabled the designer to produce a development that complements the site, with space and proportions presenting individual dwellings in a unique style.

While the designers had to meet with considerable planning regulations, it can be seen here that their ideas, concept challenges and architectural outcomes have all been achieved with gusto.

The dwellings themselves provide the viewer with a scope of modernity and a communal feel, as opposed to many developments of this nature which can provide the viewer with a feeling of compaction and bulk mass.

The mixture of claddings, steel structural components, combined with varied articulation, gives all of the dwellings individuality, while representing a common theme. While the units are definitely not "shacks", they promote a vision and a feeling of coastal use for the occupants, be that holiday makers or permanent residences.

A worthy winner, and quite possibly a very worthwhile place to pay a visit.
