The brief was to create an energy efficient home with visual interest, while capturing the views of Lake Cooper and surrounding vineyards, and capturing the natural sunlight. We had to investigate and adopt environmentally sustainable design (ESD) principles, whilst ensuring the design met the family’s needs and budget. A combination of contemporary design with traditional building methods creates an aesthetically-pleasing and functional home, incorporating ESD principles. The use of unusual splayed roof forms creates visual interest, allowing filtered light to penetrate deep into the living areas, while large expanses of glazing capitalise on the views of the surrounding landscape. The minimalistic, contemporary design emphasises the north-easterly views, bringing the surrounding environment into the home. The architectural form is perfectly balanced with the proximate landscape creating a fine example of solar passive design.
