To create a building with great aesthetics, incorporate great sustainable design principles, and keep within a very tight budget is always a challenging brief. This dwelling adopts all these principles exceptionally well, and is the worthy winner of this category. This modest house celebrates simplicity. A compact floor plan has been carefully resolved around two modules that balance lightweight prefabricated construction with thermal comfort, whilst achieving an 8 star energy rating. The material palette reflects the site and the surrounding context. An exceptional showcase for good design on a limited budget, this dwelling incorporates great living with exceptional design principles. It incorporates what all great dwellings require: great site position and orientation, the use of low embodied materials, and interesting light-filled spaces. This winning design is considered in its planning, well detailed, and carefully appointed. The dwelling has met the clients brief in providing a building which adopts passive solar design, achieves a high energy rating using low embodied materials, while ensuring the aesthetics were not compromised.
