The context of the site – located in Benjamin Terrace in Tasmania’s Mount Stuart – incorporates all of the clients’ requirements. The flexibility and strength of steel have provided a design that both enables the occupier to feel elevated and ‘float’ above the spectacular view, making it worthy of special commendation.
A design concept of this nature – with exposed skeletol structure, glass walls and acute angles that emphasise the irregular and regular shapes of the built form – is possible through the use of steel.
This was achieved using OneSteel’s hot rolled steel framing, columns, lintels and roof framing, giving a high quality construct to an innovative design.
The clients’ brief was for a contemporary modest-sized three bedroom home, with open plan living, entertainnment decks providing an aspect of spectacular views. While requiring adherence to a strict budget, the designer has completed a project that not only accentuates itself from the slope but also asserts itself modestly from the street. A worthy acheivement on a difficult but extremely rewarding site.
