The Judges were unanimous that the innovative use of glass in this project was worthy of special commendation. The brief was to create a contemporary space for a growing family within a very limited 188sqm site in Williamstown. The site needed to be functional, yet ensure sufficient light to the interiors.
The house is designed over three levels with the principal living rooms on the first floor to maximise views. Municipal guidelines determined the tri-column façade to reflect the heritage overlay and the building envelope restricted the height of the building.
An open flowing floor plan with large glazing panels creates a seamless relationship between the outdoor and indoor entertaining zones.
The massing of open and private spaces and the placement of glass to the façade ensure the streaming of natural light into the interior spaces. A mixture of translucent, opaque and clear glasses create a façade that has depth and gives privacy and light to the adjacent rooms.
