Diamond Dogs

This project is an entirely appropriate response to upgrading a Victorian house in inner-suburban Hawthorn which, while not subject to heritage controls, makes an elegant contribution to an earlier streetscape. The two-storey addition to the rear is concealed from the street, providing something of a surprise with its contemporary forms and detailing.

The plan is highly personalised, responding to the needs of the owners and their dogs, and is a welcome deviation from mainstream living area additions. Each of the ground floor elements enjoys interaction with different garden areas and decks.

Thoughtful detailing throughout adds to the feeling of warmth, and level changes provide interest and focus. Windows are strategically placed to capture views. Finishes are warm and natural, with slate and raw cement render contrasting with timber flooring and cladding.

The designer is clearly comfortable with the juxtaposition of original and new fabric: zincalume steel cladding and aluminium bifolding doors contrast with existing brickwork; introduced cast iron Victorian columns acknowledge the ornate detail of the earlier building type.

The result is a home that feels connected, open yet warm, intimate and cosseting.
