The Ivy Apartments, overlooking the St Kilda Botanical Gardens required a sharp, contemporary aesthetic from the designers. The building and its envelope needed to establish its own identity, while sitting between the adjacent Federation homes and suburban ‘6-pack’ flats.

The extended roof forms offer privacy and shadowing to residents’ balconies. The exterior finishes outline and develop volumes, yet remain understated and simple.

The overall site planning takes advantage of the orientation and brings light to the apartments through the entry atria. Exterior cut-outs and voids give interest and depth to the building and provide variation in its street front address. The cut-outs also allow seamless views to the gardens opposite.

By night, clean architectural lines are highlighted by the use of strong directional and concealed lighting solutions.

It should be noted that the interior design was largely undertaken by Hecker Phelan & Guthrie.
