The client wanted additions to the front and rear of an existing 1970s office building to better utilise the undeveloped spaces of the public areas, including provision of additional parking, creation of new leasable areas and improve vehicle and pedestrian access. The multi-faceted design solution has created space, adding a stylish café and 13 car spaces. The designer’s innovative solution has greatly improved access, and has unveiled the full potential of the site.
The upgrade skillfully integrates separate additions to the building by contrasting the existing building with instantly recognisable new design insertions. The café additions provide new east entry definition, generating a ‘vibrant social hub’ – a new meeting place. The form is contemporary, with clear geometric lines and a restrained material palette. This theme has been carried through to the new portico and entry canopy, with the canopy’s sweeping geometric form signaling a new dynamic entry point to the building. This project was a clear winner in this category.
