Windows – the Soul of the Home

New research reveals that comfort is the leading driver and motivator for home owners. They want their home filled with natural light. They want it to be naturally cool in summer and warm in winter and they are willing to pay more for this. The reality is most homes are built with windows using ordinary glass, which lets in up to 87% of heat during summer and lets out up to 40% of heat during winter. In this webinar presented by Samantha Anderson from Viridian, the key facts to improving comfort for your clients are explained.

Sustainability Victoria Energy Efficiency Research

Sustainability Victoria has undertaken research over the last six years on a range of projects investigating the energy efficiency upgrade potential of Victoria’s existing housing stock, including a series of retrofit trials that have assessed the qualitative and quantitative impact of a wide range of key energy efficiency upgrades in a total of 116 houses. The initial study looked at the energy and greenhouse saving potential of Victoria’s existing (pre-2005) housing stock, and subsequent studies have been based on implementing key energy efficiency upgrades in houses and assessing the impacts. From this research, SV has issued a series of reports on the energy efficiency upgrade potential of existing Victorian houses. SV's Ian McNicol presents a summary of this research in this webinar.

Webinar Recording - Passive Solar and NatHERS: Understand How North Windows Work

This webinar presentation by Tony Isaacs deals with Passive Solar Design principles. North windows warm up a house in winter and reduce the need for heating. So, the more north glass the better? Not always. Did you know that, beyond a certain point, adding north glass will actually INCREASE heating energy use? And this point depends on thermal mass, the type of glazing, floor coverings and even the colour of the window frame. If north windows are double glazed, however, you continue to save heating energy with larger window areas, but the benefits are less and less the greater the area of north glass gets. In re-writing Sustainability Victoria's Energy Smart Housing manual, Tony's research uncovered a number of new findings that will help you understand how NatHERS tools value traditional passive solar design principles.
