Recently retired, the clients required a dwelling where they could appreciate their additional leisure time in a spacious and relaxing environment, that would comfortably fit their extended family without feeling overcrowded. They wanted the existing living spaces opened up and extended; they wanted lots of natural light, and they wanted outdoor entertaining areas and separate rumpus/games room created.

The original layout and orientation were maintained, retaining principle views. Angled rooflines allow solar penetration via north-facing highlights and floor level full glazing. A new meals area and additional rumpus/entertainment room flow onto expansive northerly deck areas offering comfortable, practical, year-round use. All other rooms have been modernized or enhanced.

This project has seen a run-down beach house transformed into a striking contemporary home through careful replanning of existing fabric. Consideration has been given to local weather conditions, and expansive decks have been added to allow for outdoor living in all seasons.

Dynamic skillion roof forms and timber cladding fit well with the coastal aesthetic, while the wide profile ironbark boards of the decks are evocative of a marine environment. Internally, timber linings accented with elements of locally quarried stone ensure that the spaces are relaxed but sophisticated.
