Smythesdale Community Centre

The Smythesdale Community Hub pipped the opposition to win the award for Commercial Design – New Project. Smythesdale is located on the Glenelg Highway, 136km west of Melbourne, in the Golden Plains Shire.

First impressions draw the observer to what appears to be a very large modern home, and it is not until you take second look that you realise that this is, in fact, a public building.

The low-lying profile is sympathetic to its surrounding environment, and the angled butterfly rooflines and extensive use of timber-slatted screens give the building a unique form.

An excellent result has been achieved by providing a design that offers many break-out areas with open space, both inside and out. The lines are clean, and the colour palette simple, and not overly stated.

Material selection, too, has been carefully considered with combination ecoply cladding, various selected timbers and steel.

Inside, the building is uncluttered, and the neutral colours and square lines are offset by the exposed timber roof trusses.

This is a building the community should enjoy using, and sits far from the local government buildings of old.
