“The clients – Jeans West – were approached by Westfield and offered a tenancy at Westfield’s new Bondi Junction shopping complex, but the store’s appearance had to be lifted to a higher level,” said Tiffany Angus, of Tangus Design. “The brief was to make this store unique from other Jeans West stores; better than any that had previously been developed; but to not completely reinvent itself. The store had to complement the high-quality image Westfield was trying to create, but not lose sight of the fact that Jeans West does not compete in haute couture league.”

“We used the key materials previously used, but we employed them in a more inventive way, and added some strategic new elements. The challenge was to refine the space so it looked uncluttered but highly functional. The most difficult component of the design was to prevent the fitout from overpowering the merchandise, and create a space where the products were complemented by the fitout.”

“Previously we had used aluminium panelling on our shopfronts. To keep this look, but make it less dominant, we raised it off the ground level and literally hung it off the glazing. This created a light feel to the shopfront, and highlighted the window display.”

“We were also constricted with signage – there was to be none outside the glazing. Using the structural column near the entry, and turning this into a vertical sign-box overcame this problem and created a very striking element,” said Tiffany.

“The interior design of this retail fitout for Jeans West uses display layout, fittings, materials and finishes to create an exciting interior that is modern and attractive,” said Geoff Hoare, Chair of the Judging Panel. “The design allows the display of product to best effect, and the result is worthy of an award in this category.”
