Blackburn Residence

WinnerMost Innovative Kitchen Design

Designer: Studio Mint Builder: Owner-Builder

It was a clever change in orientation that transformed this cluster of rooms into varied functional zones connected together to create a physical and visual flow supported by an abundance of light and a connection to the outdoor garden. The design of the kitchen oozes the love of food, entertainment and minimalism, yet doesn’t falter when utilised as a fully functional and practical area. The merging of minimalism and practicality is achieved through concealed service functions, such as hidden refrigeration, appliances and storage, with built in joinery and service rooms, all this wrapped up in the beauty of natural stone, timber and natural light. Differing bulkhead heights assist in subtlety defining the zones. The changes of linear direction are highlighted through the flooring direction and the alignment of joinery. The asymmetrical balance of finish to both ends of the room frame and highlight the soft palette of the kitchen finishes. The decadent use of the patterned marble against the softness of the lineal timber veneer cabinetry ensures an elegance of aesthetic. There is a tranquillity about this kitchen which is achieved through the minimalist detailing. What makes this kitchen so special is the way in which the design treats this single kitchen element as a beautiful furniture piece not a traditional joinery item.
