Urban Oasis Townhouse

WinnerResidential Design: New Houses - Best Small Lot Design

Designer: Peter Searle Design Builder: Owner Builder
Photographer: Simon Smith Photography Location: Kew, VIC

This tiny 144 square metre residential lot abutting an industrial area presented the designer with both a significant challenge and a unique opportunity. Engaged to deliver a two-bedroom home with onsite car parking, the response is a clever compact house that delivers ‘big’ on amenity. Surprisingly spacious interiors are flooded with light on both levels with north facing windows, yet protected from the harsh neighbouring industrial activities. Balconies from each bedroom and the courtyard connected to the primary living area ‘open up’ the internal spaces and provide a sense of spaciousness and connectivity to the external environs. The clever use of cabinetry allows laundry and study areas to be fully useable and yet hidden from day-to-day living. The simple kitchen layout allows easy access to all essential appliances, whilst the finishes of the overhead cupboards and split-level ceiling create subtle boundaries that expand the spaces rather than confine them. The overall result is a compact, modern home that delivers big on amenity despite its postage-stamp-sized lot.
