Elegance. This word sums up this alterations and additions project, particularly in its subtle but very clever use of steel to the rear extension. These steel elements are used innovatively, demonstrating the versatility of the material through structural, functional and design aesthetic applications. Beams and columns are used for the open pergola structure and roof of the building, which is lightly wrapped by plate steel portals, providing function for the eaves and an interesting design aesthetic, with the steel-framed windows relating subtly back to this structural form. The thoughtful and elegant design approach for use of steel deemed this project the winner in this category.
