Commendation Excellence in Use of Steel

Designer: Maxa Design Pty Ltd
Builder: Owner/Builder
Photographer: Chris Neylon Photography
Location: Kallista, VIC

The judges agreed this project was worthy of being awarded a commendation. Although this project uses steel almost exclusively for its external cladding and building access, it showcases how the use of steel can provide solutions for sites which require a very high BAL design response. The elliptical tube design, inspired by a fallen charred log on the initial site visit, and the clients’ brief to incorporate ‘curved forms’, eliminates the need for ridge and valley flashings, and provides an enclosed floor structure, greatly improving the potential for any bushfire attacks.
