The client brief was to revitalise a tired and dated retail interior and connect the Jesses store in the Maude Street Mall at Shepparton with the image-conscious youth street and surf wear target market. It was important to create a unique and memorable retail experience in regional Victoria that is equal to any Australian capital city retailer store.

One of the major difficulties with the refurbishment was the fact the store had to remain open during renovations. This impacted greatly on building methodology, logistics and design considerations.

A dynamic youthful interior was created with the use of strong colour and considered space planning.

The creation of a strong identity was continued in the interior detailing and shop front signage.

The concrete look of a skate park, features reminiscent of surf waves, bold timber wood grain and white, blue and silver details contribute to the youth appeal.

The consistent use of curves in wall displays, counter designs and lighting and bulkhead details both open the space and encourage movement throughout the store. The strong contrast of colour provides dramatic interest. Suitable lighting levels and placement of fittings support the display of sale items.

What was once a mix of dark lighting and cluttered display has been transformed into a well-illuminated and organised retail solution.

This project also won the award for Retail Design–Alterations/Additions.
