St Kilda West Project

A bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe was created in an existing open loft space under a steeply pitched roof. A remarkably open and spacious feeling has been achieved in spite of the constraints of the existing space, and the need to retain the existing plywood ceiling.

Sculptural white plastered walls stop short of the steeply raking ceiling in varying angles, contrasting with the warm tones of the plywood. Openings are also angled, providing interest and revealing glimpses of the sleek ensuite and functional walk-in-‘robe.

Clever detailing of the small ensuite maximises space and avoids awkward wall/ceiling junctions, and careful consideration was given to the problems of locating services over an existing living area.

This project is a highly creative response to the constraints of working within a small, existing space. The designer has treated those constraints as opportunities and – with a few simple but deft strokes – has created a functional and beautiful space.

This project also won the award for Most Innovative Bathroom Design.
