The Convertible House

The design, siting and construction of ‘The Convertible House’ demonstrate a unique approach to energy effiency in design, whilst providing a construction that is vernacular to its surrounds.

The rural site is located in a cool temperate area at Newbury near Trentham (zoned Farming). Within this region of Victoria are some very cold winters, with warm to hot summer seasons. For this, a design must understand the rural aspects of the site, while also needing to meet the requirements of predominately cold winters.

Site orientation has provided solar access while the provision of mass floor construction captures the winter sun. Designing the centrally located ‘solar collector’ produces heat for redistribution throughout the house.

The house would definitely provide comfort of living through the cold periods at low and cost-effective means.

Opening side panels provide necessary air-flow while also providing well insulated warmth.

The design of this building not only pays homage to the aesthetic of its environment but also attempts to lessen its impact on that environment.

This project also won Best Environmentally Sustainable Design–Residential, Most Innovative Use of Steel, and Most Innovative Use of Water Efficiency.
